GREEN ENERGY FAST BECOMING A REALITY
April was an important month for the development of large-scale renewable energy projects in South Africa. Finally, after 5 years of debating, NESRA announced the latest tariffs to be paid to power producers for renewable energy. Only recently has the Government begun to support large-scale reneweable energy projects, whereas before the tariffs were too low to make renewable energy projects profitable. The new tariffs which have been guaranteed for 20 years include the following:
Landfill gas: 90c/kWh
Small scale hydro: 94c/kWh
Wind: R1.25/kWh
Concentrated solar thermal power: R2.10/kWh.
Hopefully these tariffs will stimulate the growth in South Africa.
